About the activity

Experience the awe inspiring phenomenon of the Northern Lights at Murphy Dome, the most famous Aurora viewing spot near Fairbanks and one of the best spots in the world to see the Aurora Borealis!

These hypnotic green waves of dancing light, also known as Aurora Borealis, are caused by a reaction between solar energy and earth’s atmosphere, and their mystic allure is the basis of indigenous lore from around the arctic. When you come to Alaska to see the Northern Lights, not only will you be able to create your own unique stories connecting you to the Aurora, but you will also be partaking in an experience that links you to the people of the Arctic and the wilds of Alaska.

After picking you up from your hotel in Fairbanks, the Northern Lights viewing tour will make its way to Murphy Dome, one of the highest peaks in the Fairbanks area. With an altitude of 2,890 feet at the summit, from the top of Murphy Dome you will have a 360° view of the horizon, giving you a spectacular stage from which to watch the enchanting dance of the Aurora Borealis!

The benefits of a guided Aurora viewing tour means that your van will be well equipped to drive up to Murphy Dome in winter conditions. Your safety is a priority however, and if the roads up to the summit are deemed unsafe by your guide, you will be transported to a secondary location near Fairbanks that will also be a fantastic vantage point from which to view the Northern Lights. Your guide will be able to talk to you about the Northern Lights, the history of the area and of the former Air Force Station on Murphy Dome. You will also be provided with hot beverages and snacks while you sit back and enjoy the view of the star bright Alaskan night sky, infused with ethereal green light!
