Experience one of Iceland’s most unforgettable aquatic adventures with a guided snorkelling tour in the Silfra fissure, located in Þingvellir National Park. Just under an hour’s drive from Reykjavík, this rare geological site is the only place in the world where you can swim directly between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia.
This adventure begins directly at the Silfra meeting point. You'll arrive in your own vehicle, parking at the designated lot about 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. Nestled within the UNESCO-listed Þingvellir National Park, Silfra offers easy access from the capital while immersing you in one of Iceland's most remarkable natural sites. Once on site, you’ll meet your guide and join a small group, limited to six snorkellers per guide for a safe, high-quality experience.
Following a full safety briefing and an introduction to the route, you’ll get suited up inside a heated van. All necessary equipment is provided, including a drysuit, snorkel, mask, fins, gloves, and hood. A short walk then brings you to the water’s edge where the snorkelling begins.
You’ll spend 30 to 45 minutes floating through Silfra’s four main sections. Start with the Big Crack, a narrow passage where the continental plates come closest. Continue into Silfra Hall, renowned for its vibrant hues and striking underwater visibility reaching up to 150 metres. From there, drift into Silfra Cathedral, a deeper chamber with dramatic rock formations, before ending your journey in the calm expanse of Silfra Lagoon.
Although water temperatures stay between 2°C and 4°C year-round, the drysuit provides full thermal protection, so you can comfortably enjoy the clear glacial waters. After exiting the rift and making your way back to the van, you'll return your gear and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while chatting with your guide about this unique snorkelling experience in Iceland.
Perfect for swimmers seeking an extraordinary underwater encounter, snorkelling in Silfra is a must-do activity for anyone visiting Iceland. Don’t miss your chance to explore this crystal-clear rift in one of Iceland’s most spectacular natural locations.
And for even more fun, if you can meet the guide directly at Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir), why not opt for the experience combining snorkelling at Silfra with a relaxing moment at the Laugarvatn hot springs?
