Scotland’s west coast is known for its rugged and dramatic landscape of towering mountains, magical glens, dreamy lochs, and enchanting islands – in other words, it is a landscape that is ripe for adventure! While hiking and climbing are both popular methods of experiencing mountain and glen, there is no better way to discover the natural beauty of Scotland’s west coast than Via Ferrata, which takes hiking to the next level!

Hugely popular in the Italian Dolomites and across the Alps, Via Ferratas or ‘iron ways’, allow non skilled climbers to achieve heights and access areas previously thought not possible. Developed in 2007 by Mark Weir, this Kinlochleven Via Ferrata climbs up the side of Fleetwith Pike (2,126 feet/648 metres high) following old mine workings in Kinlochleven. This exhilarating Scottish Via Ferrata experience will take you on an epic 500 metre/1,640 feet journey around a magical and previously inaccessible bedrock amphitheatre, with its plunging gulley, lush forest and the glorious 80 metre Grey Mare's Tail waterfall which you will be able to see throughout the entire route and cross over at the top!

Equipped with fixed cables, staples, ladders and bridges, this Via Ferrata route in Kinlochleven allows users to access a spectacular environment without the risks associated with unprotected scrambling and climbing. With state of the art specialist Via Ferrata equipment, sponsored by Petzl, you will be permanently clipped onto a continuous safety cable that runs the length of the route. This safety measure combined with expert guidance ensures that you are in the safest hands possible allowing you to experience and enjoy your Via Ferrata adventure near Fort William!

A great, physical activity. For us beginners to climbing, it was a bit challenging. But an 8 year-old in our group completed the climb successfully, so the rest of us couldn’t complain (or could complain very quietly). Included scaling rock face on the side of a waterfall using installed handholds and footholds, going over tightropes, and walking over thin and shaky planks.

More challenging than the photos showed but absolutely achievable for a more mature person who is a little unfit.
