The best outdoor activities in Malta

Malte is an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea composed of 8 islands, only 4 being inhabited: Malta, Gozo, Comino and Manoel. It is a state of the European Union located only 93 km south from Sicily.

The history of the archipelago dates back to the Prehistory. Numerous buildings are a witness of the presence of Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Moors and Normans. It then belonged to France and lately the British before being an independent country in 1964.

Many spots are worth visiting during your stay in Malta. Among them, the Rotunda of Mosta, a Parish church renowned for its cupola which is third largest unsupported dome in the world. There is also the megalithic temple complex of Ħaġar Qim listed in the UNESCO world heritage located in southern Malta. And of course, don't forget to discover the beautiful city of Valletta, capital of Malta and of the European culture in 2018.

The islands of the archipelago are filled with many different activities. In Malta, Gozo and Comino, scuba diving schools provide first scuba dives and intensive scuba diving trips.

If you wish to remain on the surface of the water, there's nothing better than sea kayaking to explore the caves in Malta and Gozo. In northwestern Malta, you can also practice sailing. Feel the cool wind and let it take you away!

In Saint Julian's, near Valletta, come learn how to kitesurf and enjoy the thrills of flying over the ocean. In the same spot, you can also practice water polo, the famous British sport. Windsurfing and stand up paddling are great water activities to practice on Mellieha Bay.

If you prefer to remain on the land, you won't be disappointed by the number of activities available in the archipelago. Rock climbing, hiking, cycling, golf, squash, cricket are part of the sports you can do in Malta.

In Gozo, several rock climbing schools offer courses for every levels in different spots, it can be near the water or in the heart of the Maltese countryside.

Hiking is very popular in Malta. Gozo and Malta islands offer wonderful wild landscapes. There are several marked trails near the coast and in the heart of the Maltese countryside which are adapted to all levels.

Near the town of Mgarr, in southern Gozo, you can rent a mountain bike and discover the island at your own pace. Watch out! You need to be resistant to cycle through the rugged trails!
