Step out into the beautiful Arctic landscapes of Finnish Lapland and experience the magic of feeding the reindeer in Inari! Located in northwestern Finland, Inari is known as the capital of Finnish Sámi Culture. The Sámi people are the only European indigenous group, and they have lived in the northern regions of Norway, Finland, and Sweden for thousands of years. One of the main activities of the Sámi people has been reindeer herding, and they have formed deep bonds with the creatures, so much so that wild reindeer are a rarity in Finland. This practice has spread throughout the country, and now visitors can experience meeting, feeding, and spending time with these wonderful Arctic creatures.
Now, on the day of your reindeer feeding experience from Inari, you'll need to arrive at the meeting point in the Galddoaivi Safaris headquarters to meet your instructor. They'll welcome you and distribute the thermal overalls, boots, and gloves that you'll use throughout the experience to stay warm. Once you're all geared up, it's time to go!
If the weather allows it, you'll hop on a snowmobile-pulled sleigh that will take you on a 2.4-kilometre scenic ride across the breathtaking landscapes of Finnish Lapland. When you arrive at the reindeer farm, the adventure will start! Your instructor will distribute some lichen (reindeer feed) and, with their help, you'll be able to approach the reindeer and feed them from your hand. You'll also have the chance to take photos and pet the reindeer, if they allow it. Most of the reindeer are friendly, but some tend to be a bit more distant and careful, so remember to be respectful of their space.
Keep in mind that temperatures in the Arctic can range from 5 to -30 degrees Celsius, so to prepare for this wonderful reindeer feeding experience from Inari, your instructor recommends bringing wool or thermal under layers, good middle layers, and a winter jacket that you can wear under the thermal suit if it's very cold, or if you simply want to wear your own clothes.
