About the activity
Embark on a guided kayak tour across the stunning blue waters of Kailua Bay to Moku Nui Island for an adventure of surf and sand in Kailua!
Kailua Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu! With its long stretch of soft white sand, swaying palms, and clear blue waters, it really is a Hawaiian paradise! Across the sparkling bay are the twin islands of Mokulua, including Moku Nui, a bird sanctuary that is open to visitors. During this guided kayak tour of Kailua Bay, you will have the chance to kayak to this special little island, take in the gorgeous scenery around you and the wildlife that calls it home, including sea turtles and monk seals, and go on an exploratory hike to the Queen’s Bath and its surrounding tidepools!
Before setting out across the bay, you’ll meet your guide at the Active Oahu storefront for a full safety and activity briefing. The team will help you load your kayaks and gear, including life vests, onto your car so you can drive to Kailua Beach Park to meet your guide. Once there, you’ll learn how to safely get in and out of your kayak, as well as basic paddling techniques, so you can head out confidently on your ocean adventure.
Your journey covers a total of 4.5 miles of paddling (about 2–3 hours round trip, or 1–1.5 hours each way) over turquoise waters and protected reefs. You can choose between single or double kayaks. During the kayak tour, your guide will share their knowledge about the local sea life and surrounding area, and on Moku Nui Island, they will guide your explorations. Paddling back to the beach after your time on the island, you will have an incredible view of the striking Ko'olau mountain range to accompany your return journey. For the extra adventurous, there’s also the option to stop at Popoi’a Island or the equally stunning Lanikai Beach for a quick snorkeling session. Snorkeling gear is provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Finally, once you make it back to the Active Oahu base in Kailua, you will be greeted with a fresh meal made of local Hawaiian favorites like poke bowls (seasoned raw tuna and rice) or Kalua pork with cabbage and rice drizzled with BBQ sauce.
