About the activity

Explore a hidden gem snorkel spot on the North Shore of Oahu during this self-guided snorkeling tour of Shark’s Cove!

Snorkeling Shark’s Cove is not to be missed if you love to explore underwater. Known to locals as one of Hawaii’s best shore snorkeling spots, Shark’s Cove is a small rocky bay that is part of Pupukea Beach Park on the North Shore. Its calm, clear waters are full of marine life, from butterflyfish, parrotfish, and needlefish to eels, sea urchins, and even the occasional sea turtle or sting ray! The volcanic rock formations and smooth boulders on the seafloor provide a protective environment for ocean life to thrive, making Shark’s Cove a true snorkeler’s paradise. Despite the name, there are no sharks here! The cove’s name comes from its shark-like shape when viewed from above.

Before heading to the North Shore, your adventure begins at the Active Oahu storefront in Kailua. Here, you’ll check in, receive a safety demo and activity briefing (including parking details, safe ocean entry points, and snorkeling tips), and pick up your equipment: snorkel mask and fins, lifevest, baby shampoo defog, and a dry bag. You’ll also get expert recommendations on the best snorkel spots to explore. After a one-hour drive, you’ll arrive at Pupukea Beach Park, ready to dive into Shark’s Cove!

Once at Shark’s Cove, you’ll find options for both beginners and more experienced free divers. The entry into the water here is rocky, but your guide’s tips will help you enter safely. If you’re new to snorkeling, you may prefer to start just down the road at Three Tables Beach, where a sandy entrance makes it easy to walk in before putting on your fins. This spot also features scattered coral, schools of fish, and sea turtles around its famous “table” rock formations. For families or those who prefer wading, the Pupukea tide pools on the south side of Shark’s Cove are shallow and perfect for exploring sea life without going deep.

For those with more time, you can extend your adventure by snorkeling at the south side of Waimea Bay, about a quarter-mile walk from Three Tables. This area features unique rock formations, patches of coral reef, and plenty of fish moving with the tide. Combined, these three locations - Shark’s Cove, Three Tables, and Waimea Bay – offer hours of discovery and make Pupukea Beach Park one of the best snorkeling hubs on Oahu’s North Shore.

After your snorkeling adventure, you’ll drive back to Kailua (about one hour) to return your gear at the Active Oahu base.

To make the most of your day, come prepared: wear your swimsuit, apply reef-safe sunscreen (available at the shop), and bring water shoes or sandals for the rocky paths. A rash guard is recommended for sun protection, and valuables are best left at home. Facilities include public restrooms and showers near the parking lot, and small stores and food trucks across the road where you can grab snacks or a post-snorkel meal. Keep in mind there are no lifeguards on duty, so plan responsibly and be mindful of ocean conditions.

Book your self-guided snorkeling tour of Shark’s Cove now and discover Oahu’s world-famous North Shore snorkel spots, from Shark’s Cove to Three Tables and Waimea Bay, at your own pace!
