Sólheimajökull is a glacier on the southern coast of Iceland, located between the towns of Skógar and Vík. It is an outlet of the much larger Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, which covers the active volcano Katla. A glacier hiking and kayaking excursion on Sólheimajökull is a unique and immersive way to explore the icecap and its lagoon!
The adventure starts with the glacier kayaking trip on Sólheimajökull. You'll meet the certified instructor at the base camp and walk for 5 minutes to Sólheimajökull Lagoon. Upon arrival, you'll receive your equipment (sturdy sit-on-top sea kayak, paddle, dry suit, and life vest) and a safety briefing from the instructor. No previous experience is needed, as you'll start by learning the paddling techniques for kayaking. Then, you'll set off on your glacier kayaking tour on Sólheimajökull Lagoon!
The lagoon is formed from the meltwater of Sólheimajökull Glacier and is often dotted with floating icebergs. The kayaking tour allows you to explore parts of the glacier that are inaccessible on foot. You'll paddle around the ever-changing icebergs and learn more about the environmental impact of the Icelandic glaciers. After your kayaking excursion on Sólheimajökull, you'll return to the base camp. You'll have some time to admire the breathtaking landscapes and eat your own packed lunch before your next activity.
After the break, it's time for your glacier hiking tour on Sólheimajökull. Once again, an experienced guide will provide the glacier equipment (crampons, a harness, and an ice axe) and take you through a safety briefing. Following the expert guide, you'll walk across the icy surface of the glacier. Throughout your safe glacier hike on Sólheimajökull, you'll discover the stark landscapes of the glacier, including deep crevasses, blue ice, and dark volcanic ash from past eruptions. At the end of the hiking tour on Sólheimajökull, you'll return to the base camp.
Experience the thrill of glacier kayaking and glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull and its lagoon!
