Imagine yourself in the heart of Vatnajökull National Park, where beneath the immense ice cap of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, meltwater has carved a unique canyon with walls streaked with lighter mineral veins, geodes, and white crystals glimmering in the pristine spring water. In this raw and wild setting, just 30 minutes from the fishing town of Höfn, you will experience an immersive canyoning adventure. On a clear day, the deep blue water reflects shimmering ripples onto the canyon walls, creating a striking visual contrast with the dark basalt.
Your canyoning excursion at Vatnajökull Glacier begins with an approach hike on sheep trails, winding through the trees of the Forestry Association of Austur-Skaftafellinga. As you follow the path of the river carved into this canyon, your guide will explain the transition from the glacial past to the even more ancient volcanic formations. Depending on the season, the walk is a sensory delight: you might spot wild reindeer early in the year or encounter newborn lambs and their families. From August to September, the trail is lined with edible crowberries and blueberries, while the pink Arctic Thyme flowers release a nice fragrance. Even the local trout can sometimes be spotted in the clearer pools before you begin your descent. After the 2 km journey through the canyon, the return walk takes you back to the Haukafell base camp to warm up with hot chocolate, tea, or coffee.
This tour is perfectly suited for beginners and occasionally sporty participants. It is limited to small groups to ensure your safety, maintain an intimate atmosphere, and respect the fragile ecosystem of the national park. Your guide will put an emphasis on teaching you abseiling techniques in a secure environment. While the 6-metre jumps offer a thrill, they are always optional and can be bypassed or abseiled down instead. To ensure your comfort in water temperatures ranging from a cool 8°C to a more mild 13°C, you will be equipped with high-quality 5mm wetsuits, booster vests, and wind smocks if the weather becomes challenging. All safety equipment, from ropes to harnesses, is UIAA-certified to the highest international standards.
Available from June to September, this experience is the only canyoning tour offered in this remote region of Southeast Iceland. Book your canyoning adventure at Vatnajökull near Höfn now and prepare to explore the hidden volcanic depths of the Icelandic landscape!
