Explore the Aosta glacier frontier on this hiking excursion to Lochien Lake.

A little known Lake with BIG views, hike to Lochien, one of the most beautiful observation points of the Castore, Polluce and Roccia Nera glaciers. Hidden high in the Monta Rosa Massif, follow the trail to this small alpine plateau that offers some of the most mind-blowing views in the Aosta Valley!

Location
Lochien Lake is situated on an alpine plateau overlooking the Monta Rosa Massif. Part of the Champoluc Trail to 2234m, the itinerary follows the Ru Courtot – overlooking three of the biggest glaciers in the Aosta Valley.

Activity
Meet your mountain guide at the tourism office in Champoluc for this hiking excursion to Lochien Lake. A full day excursion suited to friends and families alike, this scenic route starts in a traditional Walser village and navigates high through the Ayas Valley using marked trails deep in the alpine forest and through scenic pasture used for cattle. One of the highest summits, Lochien Lake might not be worth the climb – but the views from 2234m over the Monta Rose glacier are! A wonderful landscape and the last frontier before experienced mountaineers try their luck on three of the Aosta’s biggest glaciers, look on in amazement and explore the ‘glacier terrace’ before your head back down to Champoluc where your excursion will end.

Conditions
Considered an (E) on the Italian hiking rating, this altitude trail follows paths, pastures and forest with evident marks (stripes or cairns). Bearings knowledge and training are required and suitable hiking shoes and poles are recommended.
