If you are a dog lover and would like to experience one of the most spectacular light shows in the world, this Northern Lights dog sledding excursion from Malangen is perfect for you! The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon that occurs when the earths atmosphere and the sun's particles interact, resulting in what looks like dancing lights in the night sky. Generally, this phenomenon is only visible in what's known as the "Aurora Oval", which intersects almost perfectly with the Arctic Circle. Located around 1 hour south of Tromsø, Malangen is within both circles, which means that it boasts incredible Arctic landscapes and it's possible to observe the Northern Lights there, from September to April.
On the day of your dog sledding excursion from Malangen, you'll need to arrive at the meeting point in the Into Nature Arctic husky kennel. There, you'll meet your expert instructor, who will explain how mushing (or dog sledding) works and list a few safety recommendations to keep in mind throughout the experience. Then, it's time to gear up with the thermal suit, snow boots, and head lamp. Once you're ready, it's time to go!
Your expert instructor will drive the energetic dogs into the Arctic wilderness, as you sit back in the sled an enjoy the ride! Now, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, which means that they are unpredictable, and your instructor can't guarantee that you'll see them during the ride. However, if they do appear in the sky, your instructor will make a stop, so you can take wonderful photos to immortalize the experience. When you return to the kennel, you'll get the chance to visit the dogyard and even meet the husky puppies. You'll close out the experience with a delicious, traditional Norwegian drink and snack before saying goodbye to the dogs and your friendly instructor.
Keep in mind that the temperature in the Arctic can vary between 5 and -30 degrees Celsius (41 to -22 Fahrenheit), which means that even with the winter suit you'll borrow from your instructor, you'll need to be ready for the cold. You should bring thermal or wool underlayers, wool or fleece middle layers, and a windproof and waterproof jacket to wear under the suit if necessary. You should also prepare with a hat, a scarf, gloves, and anything else you might need (medication, snacks, etc.) to spend an amazing 3 hours on this Northern Lights dog sledding excursion from Malangen.
