An excursion lasting around 1.5 hours (depending on weather conditions, etc.) to go swimming with the Cape fur seals from Kleinbaai.
- Launch near Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, home to one of South Africa’s largest Cape fur seal colonies
- Boat trip during which you may also spot whales, dolphins, sharks, penguins and other seabirds

Course of events
Please allow around 2 hours for the whole experience.
- Meeting at the Great White House restaurant, 30 to 45 minutes before the activity begins (free parking and toilets available on site)
- Administrative formalities
- Quick briefing on how the activity will unfold, the behaviour of the seals and the safety instructions
- Setting up your equipment in the changing rooms
- Boarding the boat
- Departure for the excursion lasting approximately 1.5 hours:
- boat trip to the area around Geyser Rock (around 20 minutes), during which you will be able to spot other marine life whilst listening to the guide’s informative commentary (whales, dolphins, sharks, Cape penguins, etc.)
- preparation for the activity, with participants launching in small groups
- 20- to 30-minute snorkelling session with the Cape fur seals, with flotation aids available if required, should you wish to rest in the water
- return on board the boat and sail back to Kleinbaai (about 20 minutes)
- Disembarkation, return of equipment and end of the activity
Activity requirements
All participants must know how to swim to take part in this activity.
All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
A minimum of 4 participants is required to run this activity.
Special terms
This activity is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
All participants must sign an insurance waiver on-site.
Snorkelling masks can be worn over glasses, but it is recommended that you wear contact lenses if possible, or bring your own diving mask that is suitable for your eyesight.
Since wildlife is unpredictable, their presence is never guaranteed.
Video is available at an additional fee of R200, to be paid onsite.
If required, the team can arrange a transfer from Cape Town (R1,000 per person) or from Hermanus (R700 per person): please contact the Marine Dynamics team directly once your booking has been confirmed to arrange the transfer.

The Dyer Island and Gersey Rock Nature Reserve is home to a colony of over 60,000 South African fur seals, as well as the location for this snorkelling excursion with the seals, departing from Kleinbaai. Rich in marine biodiversity, this coastal area south of Cape Town offers an exceptional environment where many animals thrive (dolphins, whales, sharks, penguins, etc.), including the Cape fur seals you will have the pleasure of encountering during this adventure. For this 1.5-hour experience, you will board the Marine Dynamics boat, run by a team of professional marine biologist guides committed not only to the conservation of South Africa’s marine wildlife, but also to ecotourism.
