Kiruna is a town located in northern Sweden, right within the Arctic Circle. Part of the Lapland region, it is a popular winter destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Thanks to its Arctic conditions, Kiruna experiences snowy winters with long, dark nights, making it one of the best places to see the Northern Lights! If you’re looking for a little adventure and to enjoy the beauty of the Arctic night—even if the Northern Lights don’t appear—you’ll still be enchanted by the atmosphere and the star-filled sky on this evening snowshoeing excursion.
You will begin by meeting your experienced guide at the starting point in Kiruna. Then, they will go through a safety briefing and take you for a short drive to the starting point of your hike. No prior snowshoeing or hiking experience is necessary, all levels are welcome! After receiving your snowshoeing equipment (snowshoes and poles) and your Arctic clothing, you are ready for your nighttime excursion.
Following the experienced guide, you will set off on an easy trail up the Kurravaara mountain in the region. While snowshoeing near Kiruna, you'll walk over the glistening white snow beneath the light from the stars and moon and discover Sweden's most distinct wilderness. If luck is on your side, the dance of the amazing Aurora Borealis will also appear in the sky above you! In this remote area away from light pollution, the chances of witnessing the beautiful colours is high.
Once you've reached the top of the mountain, you'll enjoy a break with a hot drink and sandwiches while you take in the stunning views of the Torne River valley below. Snowshoeing in Swedish Lapland is also a great way to spot some of the native wildlife or their tracks, such as moose, reindeer, foxes, and hares. While you continue to admire the Northern Lights, the guide will share stories about the natural phenomenon and insights about the history of this Arctic location. After the break, you will snowshoe back to the starting point of your hike through the peaceful forest.
