Often overlooked because of the amazing beaches and coastline, the interior of the Sao Miguel filled with the remainings of volcanoes are amazing places to discover!
The Lago do Fogo is located right in the heart of the island and is filled with amazing landscapes. The "Fire Lake" is without a doubt one of the most stunning natural attractions of this island. This enormous blue lake is about 2 km. long and 1 km. wide and fills an extinct volcanic crater.
Considered by experts, this trail is among the best short hikes available in the São Miguel island! This day out will take you on a hike along the Lagoa do Fogo crater giving you the chance of witnessing the north coast of the island, in particular, the city of Ribeira Grande.
Along the trail, you will be amazed by the variety of flora, including the endemic Laurel Forest. Then, you will follow a small path to the inside of the crater. On the way there, you'll make a small stop at the lake where you can relax and enjoy for a bit. Once the hike is over, you will go back to Ponta Delgada through the south coast.
