The Cueva de Las Palomas lava tube was formed by the eruption of the San Juan volcano in July 1949 and can be explored with the professional guides of La Palma Outdoor in Las Manchas. Approximately 500 metres long, 3 metres wide and between 1 and 6 metres high, depending on the location, it offers an underground environment that can be visited without having to crouch or crawl, so the whole family can enjoy the adventure! You will discover a unique ecosystem, studied by the Caños de Fuego interpretation centre right next door: get ready to learn a whole host of new things about the volcano on this caving excursion through the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tunnel!
This discovery of caving on the island of La Palma will begin with an educational walk on the footbridge leading to the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tunnel. This crosses an impressive field of solidified lava and offers breathtaking views of the Cumbre Vieja mountain range and its recent volcano, Tajogaite, which appeared in 2021. Your guide will tell you all about this exceptional volcanic environment before moving on to the next stage of the experience, a visit to the lava tube! Inside, you will enjoy a pleasant temperature of around 16°C and the silence of the underground world, surrounded by solidified lava formations that your guide will show you.
In small groups of no more than 15 participants, this caving experience in the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tunnel will give you a great insight into the volcanic world of the Canary Islands. Your guide will be delighted to answer all your questions and share his passion for volcanoes and caving on the island of La Palma!

Practical information
Discover the volcanic world of the island of La Palma for 2 hours on this caving excursion through the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tunnel: accompanied by a guide, you will set off on a 1.2 km expedition, first on the footbridge (500 metres round trip), then into the lava tunnel (570 metres round trip).
Please allow around 2.5 hours for the whole experience.
- Meeting with the guide at the entrance to the volcanic tube footbridge at the Caños de Fuego Interpretation Centre (free parking) 15 minutes before the start of the activity
- Briefing on the activity and distribution of safety equipment (helmet and headlamp)
- Start of the tour on the footbridge overlooking the lava flows (about 1 hour, approx. 250 metres)
- Entrance to the lava tube for around 1 hour (underground walk of around 570 metres round trip)
- Back outside on the footbridge for the walk back to the meeting point (about 250 metres) and the end of the activity
All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Closed shoes are mandatory to take part in this activity.
Please arrive 15 minutes before the departure time.
A minimum number of 4 participants is required to run this activity.
This activity is not accessible to people with reduced mobility and is not recommended for people suffering from claustrophobia.
