Hike to the New Volcano Tajogaite of Cumbre Vieja in La Palma

The eruption of Cumbre Vieja on 19 September 2021 gave rise to Tojogaite, a new volcano on the island of La Palma that can be explored on foot with a professional guide. A trail has been set up from the Mirador Astronómico del Llano del Jable, at an altitude of 1,200 metres, so you can get close to the crater and take full advantage of the unique environment created by the 2021 eruption. A total of 7 km of walking awaits you on a circular route with 370 metres of ascent, a moderately difficult route requiring good physical condition. Your hike to the Tajogaite volcano will therefore take around 3.5 hours, with breaks along the way!

You will reach the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park by taxi from El Paso, accompanied by your guide who will ensure your safety throughout the hike to the Tajogaite volcano. The trail begins by approaching the cone of the Tajogaite volcano, where there are still pine trees, and then passes through an area once cultivated with fig, mulberry and chestnut trees. As you get closer and closer to the crater, you will be able to see the impact the eruption has had on its surroundings, with dead trees, fumaroles, and lava flows.
