Measuring 60km (37,2 miles) in length and over 300km (186,4 miles) in area, the island is dominated by Sveti Vid, which rises to 348m (1506 feet) and is part of the same mountain range as Velebit. Sveti Vid is a rocky hill with the remains of a prehistoric fortress, one of the largest prehistoric fortresses on the island. Since the 14th century, it has served as a religious site, with a small chapel of Saint-Vid.
