Being in good physical condition is required to take part in this activity. You must be able to resist around 1 hour in the sled and, as a driver, be willing and able to help the dog out on difficult sections of the trail.
All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
To drive a sled, you must be over 18 years old.
Special terms
Your instructor includes a free transportation service from the following spots in Levi village. Please get in touch with your instructor once your booking is confirmed to set up a meeting time and place.
- Hotel Levi Panorama
- Golden Crown Igloo
- Safartica Levi Office
- Levi Rakka Area
If none of these places are a good fit for you, and you don't have your own car, please let your instructor know, and they will try to find a solution for you.
This is a "self-drive" dog sledding ride, which means that, though there will be an expert to teach you how to drive the sled and direct the husky team, you will be driving it into the wilderness on your own.
Each sled can take up to 2 adults (one driver, one passenger).
This activity is open to participants of all ages. However, if you are travelling with small children, please consider if they will be able to spend at least 1 hour sitting in the sled, out in the freezing conditions of Finnish Lapland. There will be no shortcuts to return to the dog kennel, so once you're on the sled, you will have to complete the ride.
Please note that the duration and itinerary of the activity depend on weather conditions. Due to unforeseen meteorological occurrences, your itinerary might be shorter or take a different path than usual for your safety.

About the activity
Embark on an incredible adventure across the stunning landscapes of Finnish Lapland and learn a new skill by the side of a group of friendly, cute, and extremely well-trained huskies on this self-drive dog sledding safari from Levi! Historically, dog sledging has been used by Arctic peoples for hundreds of years as a practical and inventive mode of transportation, and the bond between huskies and their mushers (sledge drivers) remains a vital one to this day. Visitors in the Scandinavian countries and a few other places in the world can experience this incredible activity and even drive the sleds themselves (with a little training). This is what Safartica proposes to clients on this experience, in the incredible and wild Arctic landscapes that surround the village of Levi, mostly known for its ski resort.
On the day of your self-drive dog sledding excursion from Levis, you'll have the option to be picked up in certain spots around the village or you'll need to arrive at the meeting point at least 20 minutes before the starting time of the experience. At the Safartica headquarters, you'll meet your expert instructor, who will give you a thorough safety briefing and distribute the high-quality equipment you'll use throughout the day, which will include a thermal suit, snow boots, gloves, a scarf, woollen socks, and a beanie. You'll have some time to gear up, and once you're ready, it's time to go!
The experience will start as you drive over to the dog kennel, where you'll meet the friendly huskies who will lead your sled. There, an expert musher (dog sled driver) will teach you all you need to know about driving the sled and leading the husky team, as well as give you a clear itinerary, so you know where to go during the experience. Once you feel prepared, it's time to start! You'll spend around 1 hour riding the sled at full speed over the stunning landscapes of Finnish Lapland, enjoying the incredible energy from the huskies and the peaceful atmosphere of the snowy forests you cross. The circuit will be around 16 kilometres in length, and when you return to the kennel, you'll say goodbye to the team of adorable huskies, and warm up with hot drinks and biscuits.
Keep in mind that, though your instructor will lend you good-quality winter equipment, you should also come prepared with thermal layers and even a good windproof and waterproof jacket to wear under the suit if it's very cold outside. You should also bring a hat, a scarf, warm winter shoes, a hat, and anything else you might need (medication, extra snacks) to spend 3 hours on this amazing dog sledding safari from Levi!
