Immerse yourself in the Arctic wilderness of Svalbard and learn about the history of an abandoned mining town on this great guided trek from Longyearbyen to Advent City! A photographer's paradise, Adventcity was a thriving mining town in the early 20th century, before it was abandoned around the 1950s, along with all the mining infrastructure that had been built there. The ghost town is located on the eastern side of the Svalbard Archipelago, in Adventfjorden, on the island of Spitsbergen. This wonderful and mysterious place is located about 5 kilometres from Longyearbyen, Svalbard's capital, and the way is lined by gorgeous mountain, fjord, and sea landscapes that will delight you.
On the day of your guided trek to Advent City, you'll need to arrive at the meeting point at the Arctic Footsteps headquarters in Longyearbyen. There, you'll meet the experienced and knowledgeable instructor who will guide you through the experience. They'll explain the route you'll take and give you a few safety recommendations to follow throughout the day before it's time to go.
The experience will start as you leave Longyearbyen behind and exchange buildings and roads for coastal trails and mountain passes. You'll follow your instructor as you learn more about Svalbard's history, its 20th-century mining success, and the eventual abandonment of the Advent City mines. Once you arrive at the city, you'll be able to explore the old machinery and industrial infrastructure left behind to be reclaimed by nature, as well as some historic buildings and even a graveyard that contains the history of the people who settled in the town before it was abandoned. You'll then return to Longyearbyen with a richer and deeper knowledge of the Archipelago's history and Arctic lifestyle.
Keep in mind that temperatures in the Arctic can vary from 5 to -30 degrees Celsius. With this in mind, please prepare with warm winter clothing, including thermal underlayers, wool or fleece mid-layers, and windproof and waterproof outerwear. You should also bring some sunglasses to protect your eyes from the snow's glare, a hat, and anything else you might need (medication, snacks, etc.) to spend an amazing 6 hours on this wonderful guided trek from Longyearbyen to Advent City.
