As the world's northernmost settlement with a population of over 1000, Longyearbyen is a unique and interesting town located in Norway's Svalbard Archipelago. This archipelago is full of Arctic landscapes, including fjords and glaciers, which makes it a veritable paradise for nature lovers and photographers looking to capture unique, magnificent scenery.
On the day of your snowshoe hike to the Longyearbreen Glacier, you'll need to arrive at the meeting point at the Arctic Footsteps headquarters in Longyearbyen. There, you'll meet the experienced and knowledgeable instructor who will guide you through the experience. They'll explain the route you'll take and give you a few safety recommendations to follow throughout the day before it's time to go. They will also distribute snowshoes and give you a quick lesson on how to walk with them.
The experience will start as you leave Longyearbyen behind and immerse yourself in the stunning moraine terrain of the glacier, which has been shaped by thousands of years of ice movement. In 1 to 1.5 hours, you'll reach the top of the glacier's plateau and be rewarded with views of faraway fjords and icy mountains, as your instructor tells you about the formation of glaciers and how they carve the landscapes around them. You'll then descend the glacier and, before you return to Longyearbyen, explore some incredible ice caves that have formed at the foot of the glacier.
Keep in mind that temperatures in the Arctic can vary from 5 to -30 degrees Celsius. With this in mind, please prepare with warm winter clothing, including thermal underlayers, wool or fleece mid-layers, and windproof and waterproof outerwear.
