Experience the thrill of learning how to fly by yourself on this paragliding initiation course in Lisbon! With expert instructors who will give you theory as well as practical lessons for 5 to 10 days, you'll get an International Pilot paragliding license that will allow you to start taking flights on your own.
Your paragliding initiation course on the different beaches of Lisbon will be divided into three sections:
- Initiation: You'll learn about ground handling, including front and reverse, and some takeoff techniques, as well as start taking small altitude flights
- Evolution: You'll start taking higher-level flights
- Autonomous pilot: You'll learn about dynamic lift flights
In between these practical lessons, you'll learn the theory of paragliding, which includes the technical names for the equipment and maneuvers in the sport, how to recognize aerodynamic and local winds, safety regulations, paragliding legislation, air rules, meteorology, first aid response when there is an accident, and what kind of accidents can occur during paragliding flights.
During your paragliding initiation course in Lisbon, you'll have to meet your instructor at a set meeting point at 10:00 to start the lesson of the day, which will take its course during the day, and finish at around 17:00. The course takes place on different beaches all around the Portuguese capital, so you can learn to handle different terrains and wind conditions. Some of the locations used for paragliding flight training are Praia Grande, Foz do Lizandro, Praia das Biscas, and Arrábida (you can observe all locations on the map above). It's important to clarify that paragliding is a completely weather-dependent activity, which means that if there's rains, strong winds, or no wind at all, the lesson will have to be postponed, which is why the course is 5 to 10 days long, it's simply not always possible to set an exact duration. The meeting point can also vary everyday depending on the weather. All locations are accessible by car and parkings are nearby.
Once you have completed your paragliding initiation course in Lisbon, you will need to take a written exam to be fully certified as an international paragliding pilot, and you'll be able to go paragliding on your own anywhere in the world! However, this is not a professional certification, which means that if you do go paragliding on your own, (without an instructor) you can't take someone with you.
Paragliding is an amazing sport that will take you high into the sky and show you the world from a different perspective. However, it tends to be reasonably physically demanding and can be dangerous in certain cases. With this in mind, to be able to complete this paragliding initiation course on the beaches of Lisbon, you'll need to be over 16 years old, not be pregnant, or have any sort of physical or mental disability, and you will have to take out special insurance via the Portuguese Free Flight Federation.
For those curious about the technical side, rest assured: all equipment is top-tier and meticulously maintained. Helmets are Supair, wings come from UP, Airdesign, and Triple Seven, harnesses are Supair and Woody-Valley, and radios are Kenwood. Gear is checked daily, inspected every 100 hours, and typically renewed every five years depending on usage. Additional safety equipment is available on site, including a rescue parachute and a first aid kit. Our instructors hold the highest certifications, including Paragliding National Instructor A, tandem, paramotor, and trike instructor licenses, and some are national champions. With around 25 years of experience, they’re fully equipped to guide complete beginners with confidence and care.
With all this in mind, don't miss out on your chance to learn how to fly with the stunning landscapes around Portugal's capital with this paragliding initiation course around the beaches of Lisbon. You won't regret it!
