Nestled at the foot of the Pyrenees, Pau is a gateway to exhilarating hydrospeed adventures, where the Gave de Pau river carves its way through verdant valleys and under the gaze of snow-capped peaks. This southwestern French city, celebrated for its panoramic views of the mountains and its lively Basque-influenced culture, is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. The crisp mountain air carries the scent of pine and river spray, while the ever-changing light dances across the water’s surface. Hydrospeed in Pau is more than a sport; it is an immersion in the region’s wild energy, where the pulse of the river echoes the vibrant spirit of the Béarn.

Practising hydrospeed here means embracing the river’s contrasts, from tranquil stretches where sunlight filters through overhanging trees to the thunderous rush of whitewater rapids. The Gave de Pau, with its clear, cool currents and varied terrain, offers routes for all levels, including the renowned Pau-Pyrénées Whitewater Stadium, a venue that hosts international competitions. Sessions typically last between one and two hours, guiding participants through a sequence of swirling eddies, standing waves, and calm pools. The sensation of gliding just above the riverbed, feeling the textured stones beneath the board and the chill of the water against your wetsuit, is both invigorating and grounding. The rhythm of the river alternates between moments of adrenaline-fuelled action and peaceful glides, offering a complete sensory journey.

Local guides in Pau are passionate professionals, deeply rooted in the region’s outdoor culture. They provide all necessary equipment, including reinforced hydrospeed boards, fins, helmets, and thermal wetsuits to ensure comfort and safety in the mountain-fed waters. Before setting off, instructors deliver thorough briefings on river navigation, safety protocols, and technique, adapting their guidance to each participant’s experience. The emphasis on safety is matched by a welcoming atmosphere, making hydrospeed accessible while maintaining rigorous standards. Logistics are streamlined, with easy access from Pau’s city centre and nearby towns such as Lourdes and Oloron-Sainte-Marie, reflecting the area’s commitment to outdoor adventure.

The hydrospeed season in Pau typically runs from spring through early autumn, when the river’s flow is ideal and the weather is mild. While many routes are suitable for beginners, a reasonable level of physical fitness is essential, as navigating the river requires both stamina and agility. The activity attracts a diverse mix of participants, from adventurous families and groups of friends to solo travellers seeking a new challenge. Whether you are new to riverboarding or looking to refine your technique, Pau’s rivers offer opportunities for progression and discovery.

Unfortunately I don't speak French and my pilot didn't speak much English, but it wasn't that necessary! The flight lasted about 30 minutes and we flew at around 2500ft and 120kph. Its quite breath taking being in such a small contraption at such height! You can see a long way and have unobstructed views with the glass window and doors.
