To understand why rock climbing in Cinque Terre is so captivating, imagine the Ligurian coastline unfolding beneath your feet, where ancient terraced vineyards meet rugged cliffs and the Mediterranean shimmers in the distance. This UNESCO World Heritage site, nestled between the vibrant towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. The interplay of sunlight on ochre and slate-coloured rock faces, the scent of wild herbs carried by the sea breeze, and the distant sounds of waves and village life create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and serene. Climbing here is not just a sport, but a way to connect with the landscape and spirit of Liguria.

Practising rock climbing in Cinque Terre is an immersive experience, shaped by the region’s distinctive terrain. The cliffs, composed mainly of sandstone and schist, offer a variety of textures and holds, from sharp crimps to smooth, weathered ledges. Routes typically range from single-pitch sport climbs to longer, more adventurous multi-pitch ascents, with grades suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers. Many routes are set above the sea, where the air is tinged with salt and the views stretch across the Gulf of La Spezia to the distant Apuan Alps. Sessions often last half a day to a full day, allowing time to savour the changing light and shifting colours of the coastline. The contrast between the quiet focus of a belay ledge and the adrenaline of a challenging move is heightened by the ever-present backdrop of olive groves and pastel villages.

The best seasons for rock climbing in Cinque Terre are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and the cliffs are bathed in soft, golden light. I've been snorkeling many times before, but never in Italy or Cinque Terre, so I didn't know what to expect. The trip was fine, just not really worth the 74 euro we paid for two people. We went out, they tied to a buoy less than 5 minutes from the port and several SCUBA divers started a dive, then the very friendly guide told us to jump in and swim along the rocks. The rocks had lots of fish, but other than that there wasn't much else to see. We also didn't know how long we would be out for so I kept checking to see if the guide was trying to call us back to the boat (he stayed on the boat, which was fine). We kind of got bored and were relieved when he called us back. Then we weren't sure if we were going to a second location or not. We went back to shore so the divers could get fresh air tanks (I think?) and we got off. The guide asked if we had a good time, and told us to have a good day. We got the hint and left. It was fine, just keep your expectations in check.

Pour notre deuxième plongée, nous avons été enchanté par la sympathie et l'écoute des moniteurs. Seul bémol, pas de départ en pleine mer.
