To set sail in Stockholm is to immerse yourself in a city shaped by water, where the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren weave through a tapestry of islands, inlets and historic quays. The Swedish capital, often called the “Venice of the North,” offers a unique sailing environment defined by its archipelago of over 30,000 islands, skerries and islets. Here, the interplay of light on the water shifts from the soft pastels of dawn to the golden glow of long summer evenings, while the gentle hum of city life blends with the calls of seabirds and the scent of brackish air. Sailing in Stockholm is more than a sport; it is a passage through centuries of maritime tradition, with the skyline of Gamla Stan, the Royal Palace and the distant silhouette of Djurgården providing a dramatic backdrop.

The experience of sailing in Stockholm is both varied and rewarding, offering routes that cater to a wide range of interests and abilities. Beginners and seasoned sailors alike can navigate the sheltered waters between Lidingö, Vaxholm and the outer archipelago, where pine-clad islands and smooth granite outcrops rise from the sea. Typical excursions might last from a few hours to a full day, with options to anchor in quiet coves or glide past bustling harbours. The sensation of the wind filling the sails, the rhythmic splash of water against the hull and the ever-changing play of sunlight on the waves create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and serene. Some routes offer a sense of adventure as you tack through narrow channels or round exposed headlands, while others invite moments of stillness, drifting in the lee of an island as the city recedes into silence.

Local guides and instructors in Stockholm are deeply rooted in the region’s maritime culture, combining technical expertise with a genuine passion for the sea. All sailing activities are led by licensed professionals who prioritise safety and comfort, providing modern, well-maintained boats and all necessary equipment, including life jackets and weather-appropriate gear. Briefings before departure ensure that everyone, regardless of experience, understands the basics of navigation and safety procedures. The city’s sailing community is welcoming and inclusive, reflecting Sweden’s strong outdoor ethos and commitment to sustainable enjoyment of its natural resources. Logistics are straightforward, with easy access to departure points from central Stockholm, and clear guidance on what to bring and expect.

The sailing season in Stockholm typically runs from late spring to early autumn, when daylight lingers and the archipelago comes alive with colour and activity. While many outings are suitable for beginners, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended, as handling sails and moving around the boat can be physically engaging. Families, groups of friends, solo travellers and corporate teams will all find experiences tailored to their needs, whether seeking a relaxed introduction to yachting or a more hands-on adventure. The diversity of routes and conditions means that both novices and experienced sailors can find the right level of challenge and enjoyment.

To discover sailing in Stockholm is to embrace the city’s elemental connection to water, light and open horizons. Whether you are drawn by the promise of exploration, the beauty of the archipelago or the camaraderie of life at sea, booking a sailing experience through Manawa opens the door to an unforgettable journey in one of Europe’s most captivating maritime landscapes.

This is the way to travel- Sault & Thigo were thorough in setting us up for the trip, showing us how to prepare the kayaks (& ourselves:) & explaining the safety issues. Then, on the water, they pointed out all the birds we were seeing - e.g., geese, eider duck, plummeting terns. I loved it from start to finish. On the wooded island we stopped at, they made us a lovely lunch of cheesey pies & salad, drinks & dessert if you wanted it. Some of us even took a wee dunk in the sea, which was properly invigorating (as you might expect from the Baltic:) & so ensured a power-paddle back to Dalabro, the starting point. The only downer was that it ended! I would love to do a multi-day trip.
