Dog sledding in Åre offers a unique way to explore this Scandinavian wonderland, where snow-laden forests, frozen lakes, and rolling fells stretch toward the Norwegian border. The area’s crisp air, gentle daylight, and the distant silhouette of Åreskutan mountain create an atmosphere both invigorating and serene. Here, the tradition of mushing is woven into local culture, inviting travellers to experience the wild beauty of northern Sweden in an authentic and exhilarating way.

Setting out on a dog sledding tour in Åre is an immersive journey through a world of contrasts. The silence of the snow-draped woods is broken only by the rhythmic patter of paws and the soft hiss of sled runners gliding over powder. Typical routes wind through ancient pine forests, across open marshes, and along the banks of the Indalsälven river, revealing vistas dusted in blue twilight or sparkling under midday sun. Depending on the chosen excursion, outings can last from a brief introduction to half-day or full-day adventures, with opportunities to pause and absorb the landscape’s subtle textures—the crunch of snow, the scent of resin, the play of light on frosted branches. Whether steering your own sled or riding as a passenger, the experience balances moments of quiet reflection with bursts of speed and teamwork, as you and the huskies navigate winding trails and gentle slopes.

Local guides in Åre are passionate professionals, deeply connected to the region’s outdoor traditions. They provide all necessary equipment, from insulated suits and boots to sturdy sleds and harnesses, ensuring comfort and safety in sub-zero temperatures. Before departure, guides offer thorough instruction on handling the sled and understanding the dogs’ behaviour, fostering confidence for both beginners and seasoned adventurers. Safety is paramount, with routes carefully selected according to weather and snow conditions, and group sizes kept small for a personalised experience. The camaraderie between guides, guests, and the husky teams reflects Åre’s welcoming outdoor culture, where respect for nature and animals is at the heart of every journey.

Dog sledding in Åre is accessible to a wide range of participants, though a reasonable level of fitness is recommended, especially for those wishing to drive their own sled. The main season runs from December to April, when snow cover is reliable and the landscape is at its most enchanting. Families, couples, solo travellers, and groups will all find options suited to their interests and abilities, with shorter rides ideal for beginners or those with younger children, and longer expeditions offering a deeper sense of adventure. While no prior experience is required, participants should be prepared for cold weather and some physical activity, particularly when helping the dogs on uphill sections.

Amazing experience! Dogs were very friendly and well cared for. We were taken on the sled through woods and over a frozen lake. We were asked if we wanted to go further than the agreed 16km and offered coffee to warm ourselves up afterwards
