This jeep tour to Lake Mývatn departs from Akureyri, a vibrant town in northern Iceland. Lake Mývatn lies about 90 kilometres (56 miles) east of Akureyri and is part of a dynamic volcanic landscape shaped by eruptions and geothermal activity over thousands of years. On this excursion, you'll visit the lake and its surrounding natural scenery.

For your jeep tour to Lake Mývatn, you can meet the guide at the starting point or choose your pick-up location in Akureyri (please specify when booking). You'll be greeted by your experienced guide and board the comfortable Jeep for your full-day adventure! After a quick itinerary briefing, the guide will start driving from Akureyri along the coast of Eyjafjordur, one of the longest fjords in Iceland. On the way to Lake Mývatn, you'll stop at Goðafoss waterfall, a spectacular natural phenomenon known as the 'Waterfall of the Gods.'

Formed around 2,300 years ago during a volcanic eruption, Lake Mývatn is characterised by lava formations, pseudocraters, and geothermal features. After visiting the lake, you'll continue your journey to Grjótagjá cave and stop at the Mývatn Nature Baths in Námaskarð. You'll get the opportunity to relax in the steam baths, soak in the geothermal waters, and even get a massage! Afterwards, the jeep tour around Lake Mývatn continues to Dimmuborgir, a fascinating area of lava formations resembling twisted towers and arches.

Then, the guide will drive you to Skútustaðagígar, an area of pseudocraters formed by steam explosions when lava flowed over wetlands. The last stop on the tour is at a unique photo spot in Eyjafjordur. From this position, you'll have an excellent view of the winding fjord and the town of Akureyri. Throughout the excursion, you'll learn about the important history and geography of northern Iceland while immersing yourself in some of its most breathtaking natural landscapes, including geothermal pools, lakes, fjords, waterfalls and more! At the end of the trip, you'll return to the original starting point in Akureyri.
