This trip departs from Akureyri, a diverse town in northern Iceland. As the second-largest urban area after Reykjavík, it is often referred to as the 'Capital of the North.' Nestled at the base of Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, Akureyri is also a gateway to some of the country's most iconic natural attractions!

To start your sightseeing tour from Akureyri, you'll be picked up from your chosen location in the town, or you'll meet the guide directly at the departure point. After boarding the comfortable vehicle, the guide will go through an overview of the day's itinerary. Then, your fjord and waterfall tour in northeast Iceland begins! The guide will drive you along the coast of the renowned Eyjafjordur. The first stop on the tour is at Goðafoss, a spectacular waterfall.

After admiring the waterfall, you'll continue to Lake Mývatn, known for its geothermal waters. The lake was formed by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, which created dramatic volcanic landscapes in the surrounding region. You'll visit some of these volcanic landforms, including Skútustaðagígar, an area of pseudocraters formed by steam explosions when lava flowed over wetlands. Afterwards, you'll stop at Dimmuborgir, a unique lava field with fascinating rock formations, caves, and pillars. You'll also take a look at Grjótagjá Rift, a small lava cave with a geothermal hot spring inside.

Your sightseeing tour from Akureyri continues to Selfoss and Dettifoss, two of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe! You'll witness Dettifoss plunging 44 metres (144 feet) into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon with a thundering roar. Then, you'll head to the Mývatn Nature Baths, home to relaxing, mineral-rich waters. You'll have the chance to unwind and bathe in the geothermal pool. After your peaceful bathing experience, you'll start the return journey to Akureyri. The final stop on the tour is at a magnificent photo spot in Eyjafjordur, which overlooks the stunning fjord and the town of Akureyri. The guide will then drop you back at the original starting point in Akureyri.

Discover all of the best waterfalls, fjords, pools, and volcanic landscapes in northeastern Iceland on this sightseeing trip from Akureyri!
