This trip departs from Akureyri, the largest town in northern Iceland. On the jeep tour from Akureyri, you'll travel along Iceland's fascinating volcanic landscapes to the mighty Askja Caldera!

Your sightseeing tour to Askja Caldera begins with pick-up from Akureyri (please specify your location when booking). You'll be greeted by the experienced guide and board the comfortable Super Jeep. This excursion is for private groups of up to 4 participants, to ensure an intimate and personalised experience. After going through the day's itinerary, the adventure begins! The guide will start driving along route number 1 through the Mývatn area. The first stop on the tour is at Herðubreiðarlindir.

Herðubreiðarlindir is a serene oasis of lush greenery and fresh water springs located in the otherwise stark and rugged Ódáðahraun Lava Desert. You'll embark on a short guided tour of Herðubreiðarlindir, learning about its unique geology and history. With the guide, you'll walk to a shelter used by the legendary outlaw Fjalla Eyvindur in 1775, sit by the stream and sip some natural cool water, and enjoy the beautiful view of the highlands. Then, you'll prepare for your hike to Askja Caldera!

The guide will choose the route of the hike depending on the day's weather conditions. Usually, the hike will take 35-45 minutes each way, with snowy conditions lasting until mid-July. The caldera lies within the Dyngjufjöll mountains, a volcanic range created by eruptions along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. You'll hike to Víti Crater, a smaller crater located within Askja, containing a geothermal lake with bright turquoise waters. At Víti, you have some free time to bathe in the mineral-rich waters or hike along the crater. During your hiking trip in Askja, you'll learn more about its interesting geography and formation. Make sure to bring a packed lunch and drinks with you! At the end of the adventure, you'll be driven back to the starting point in Akureyri.
