Located north of the Arctic Circle, in the heart of Swedish Lapland, Abisko National Park is among the very best places to witness the Northern Lights near Kiruna. This remarkable natural site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage area, not only offers the advantage of being far from any light pollution but also boasts an impressive 80% chance of seeing the aurora borealis if you stay in the region for at least 3 days. It is no wonder, then, that the team at Lights Over Lapland decided to make the most of these exceptional conditions by offering guided tours dedicated to photographing the Northern Lights in Abisko. Ready to capture the fleeting beauty of this natural wonder with the help of experienced professionals?
Depending on the day’s snow conditions and the aurora forecast, your excursion may take place in a few different ways: you might set off aboard a sled pulled by your guide’s snowmobile, explore on foot within a 1-kilometre radius of the base, or travel by minivan to reach the best possible viewing spot within 100 kilometres of Abisko, perhaps even towards Kiruna or near the border with Norway. Once you have arrived at your observation point, the guides will be on hand to assist and advise you on the techniques used to photograph the Northern Lights. You will be provided with a Nikon D3200 or D5100 camera fitted with an 18–55mm zoom lens, although you are of course welcome to use your own equipment if you prefer. A hot drink and a light snack will also be offered while you wait for the lights to appear, keeping you warm in a thermal suit, around a campfire, or in a sheltered hut, depending on your location.
Even if conditions aren’t perfect and you don’t have the good fortune to witness the aurora during your night out, your guides will make sure you still have a fantastic time in their company – sharing photography tips and fascinating insights into the history of Abisko National Park, the Northern Lights phenomenon, and much more. So don’t wait any longer and join this guided Northern Lights photography tour in Abisko, an unforgettable experience open to both amateur and seasoned photographers alike!
