Located 15km from Grenoble as the crow flies, Chamrousse was officially created in 1950. Facing the Grand Albert, the resort has a rich history. Known in France for its Croix de Chamrousse, this local monument bears witness to the village's past. Rebuilt in 1990 with a metal base to withstand the weather, foundations prove that the cross dates from 1856. At 12 metres high, the Chamrousse monument overlooks the whole village and hides the magnificent Robert Lakes behind it.

In 1968, Chamrousse became a world success by hosting an event at the Grenoble Winter Olympics. The resort was lucky enough to host all the men's and women's alpine skiing events. These Games created the legend of Frenchman Jean-Claude KILLY, triple gold medallist in Downhill, Giant Slalom and Special Slalom. In his honour in 2018, during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Grenoble Olympics, Chamrousse organised a Legends Race which retraced the event and the exploits of the French skier.

Culturally, Chamrousse aims to create a green resort. As a reward for their efforts, the village was awarded the Flocon Vert label in 2017, but Chamrousse continues to put nature first by committing to natural development and announcing their new project. Recently, the "Chamrousse 2030" project was announced, the aim is to restructure the town centre into a Smart Station.
