To glide across the snow-laden landscapes of Rovaniemi is to experience the heart of Finnish Lapland in its purest form. Cross-country skiing here is not just a sport but a journey through a world shaped by Arctic light and silence. Rovaniemi, perched on the edge of the Arctic Circle, is renowned as the official hometown of Santa Claus, yet its true magic lies in the endless forests, frozen rivers, and gently rolling fells that surround the city. The Ounasvaara hill rises just east of the city centre, offering panoramic views of the Kemijoki River and the distant wilderness. In winter, the low sun casts a golden glow over the snow, while the air carries the crisp scent of pine and the faint sound of skis gliding over powder. This is a place where the rhythm of nature sets the pace, inviting both adventure and reflection.

Practising cross-country skiing in Rovaniemi is a dynamic and immersive experience. Well-groomed trails wind through ancient spruce forests, across open marshes, and along the banks of the Ounasjoki and Kemijoki rivers. Routes vary in length and difficulty, from gentle loops suitable for beginners to challenging circuits that test endurance and technique. A typical outing might last from one to three hours, with the possibility of longer excursions for those seeking deeper immersion. The terrain is diverse, alternating between tranquil, snow-blanketed woods and open stretches where the wind whispers through the trees. The sensation of moving silently over the snow, feeling the cold air on your face and the steady rhythm of your breath, is both invigorating and meditative. At times, you may pause to hear only the distant call of a raven or the soft crunch of snow underfoot, before pushing forward into the Arctic quiet.

The local outdoor community is welcoming, sharing traditions such as warming up with hot berry juice at trail shelters or exchanging stories around a fire after a day on the snow.

The cross-country skiing season in Rovaniemi typically extends from late November to early April, when snow conditions are at their best. The activity is accessible to a wide range of participants, from first-timers eager to learn the basics to seasoned skiers seeking new challenges. an incredible tour, so much better than just the 500m at santa village. A secluded business away from roads and populated areas. Really feels magical and the dogs are incredibly cared for and loved! We absolutely loved it and would go again. Spent ages looking for the best place where dogs are cared for well and this really was the best of the best.

This was an amazing experience whilst staying in Rovaniemi. Floating under a clear sky, with the moon shining bright was incredible. The suits keep you warm whilst you are in the water. Highly recommend to give it a try.
