To understand why horseback riding in Saariselkä stands out, one must first picture the vast, unspoiled landscapes of Finnish Lapland. Saariselkä, nestled within the northern reaches of the Urho Kekkonen National Park, is a region where rolling fells meet ancient pine forests, and the air carries the crisp scent of lichen and spruce. Here, the changing light paints the tundra in shifting hues, from the soft gold of summer evenings to the ethereal blue of polar winter. This remote corner of Finland, close to the village of Ivalo and the legendary Inari Lake, offers riders a rare opportunity to connect with both nature and the deep-rooted traditions of the North. Horseback riding in Saariselkä is not just a sport; it is an immersion into the silence, space, and subtle magic of Lapland’s wilderness.

Riding through Saariselkä’s varied terrain is a sensory journey. Trails wind across open fells, where the ground is springy with moss and the wind carries the distant calls of birds. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the landscape in a gentle, lingering light, while autumn brings a tapestry of ruska colours—fiery reds, ochres, and golds underfoot. Routes often lead through birch groves, along the banks of clear rivers like the Ivalojoki, and up gentle slopes with panoramic views of the surrounding tundra. Depending on the chosen excursion, rides may last from a couple of hours to a full day, with options for both tranquil exploration and more spirited canters. The rhythm of hooves on soft earth, the cool air on your face, and the quiet companionship of your horse create a unique sense of freedom and presence. Saariselkä’s trails are accessible yet wild, offering both moments of peaceful solitude and exhilarating movement.

Local guides in Saariselkä are experienced professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s climate, terrain, and equestrian traditions. All necessary equipment, including helmets and weather-appropriate clothing, is supplied, ensuring comfort and safety in changing conditions. The outdoor culture in Saariselkä is built on respect for nature and animals, and this ethos shapes every aspect of the riding experience, from preparation to the final return to the stables.

Horseback riding in Saariselkä is possible year-round, though each season offers a distinct atmosphere. In winter, guided rides may take place on snowy trails beneath the northern lights, requiring warm layers and a sense of adventure. Most excursions are suitable for beginners, as the horses are steady and guides provide thorough instruction, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended to ensure comfort during longer rides. Families, couples, solo travellers, and groups will all find options tailored to their interests and abilities, whether seeking a gentle introduction or a more challenging journey across the fells.

It was really great! There were just the two of us and the guide. It was a full-day tour (starting around 9 a.m. and returning at about 4 p.m.). We rode through forests, hills, and roads, with routes of varying difficulty. The guide first checked our driving skills to choose the appropriate level of difficulty. Ice fishing was just an additional attraction, but everything else was a real adventure for drivers. We spent many hours driving through the snow. There was also a campfire with sausages and hot tea. I can truly recommend this activity.

If was an extremely cold day -40 and that made it quite challenging but the activity without the extreme of the weather was amazing. We caught a fish though
