To witness the grandeur of whale watching in Ponta de São Lourenço is to stand at the edge of Europe and gaze into the wild Atlantic, where the land narrows to a dramatic peninsula on Madeira’s eastern tip. Here, the volcanic cliffs plunge into deep blue waters, sculpted by wind and waves, and the horizon stretches unbroken. The area’s unique geography, with its proximity to Machico and the protected waters of the Desertas Islands Nature Reserve, creates an exceptional setting for marine encounters. The interplay of sunlight on the ocean, the scent of salt carried on the breeze, and the ever-changing sky set the stage for unforgettable moments. Ponta de São Lourenço is renowned not only for its rugged beauty but also for its rich marine biodiversity, making it a prime destination for those seeking close encounters with whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.

Setting out on a whale watching excursion from Ponta de São Lourenço is an immersive journey into the Atlantic’s living theatre. Boats depart from nearby marinas, gliding past ochre cliffs and the stark, windswept headland, before reaching the deep offshore channels where cetaceans thrive. The experience is a blend of anticipation and serenity: the gentle roll of the vessel, the cool spray on your skin, and the hush that falls as everyone scans the horizon. Sightings may include resident bottlenose dolphins, migratory sperm whales, or even the elusive blue whale, depending on the season. Tours typically last two to three hours, balancing moments of quiet observation with bursts of excitement as a whale breaches or a pod of dolphins races alongside the boat. The contrast between the wild, open sea and the intimate presence of these majestic animals creates a powerful sense of connection with nature.

it was a bit cloudy that day, overall this experience was amazing, staff were friendly, told a lot of things about Madeira
Kayaking and snorkiling was the best combo. It was fun, and highly enjoyable.
Nice to see different spots by kayak and get some explanations by the guide. A pity that we could’ve go to the edge of the peninsula because of the wind. But the cave in the other side of the bay was also very interesting.

It was nice but for me the staff did nothing as part of boat driver. There was no explanation about the kind of fish or fauna live inside this part of the island

My boyfriend and I did the half day kayak experience. It was over 60€ per person. The kayaking part was fun and we got interesting info about the island and the deserted part. However, the snorkeling was mwa. Only a bit of grey fish. After the kayaking part at 12:30 we were told that we could have lunch, which we expected (based on the pictures) much more of. For some people who did half a day tour (which was approximately 25€ cheaper) the tour ended now. In fact, it did for us too. We went for the lunch which was only a small toast and a small beer (not worth 25€, more like 10€ per person) and after that we asked whether we could take a boat earlier back to the marina. That was possible, so we went back at 14:30. I still don't really understand what was the purpose of the hours after 12:30 and would recommend you do to the shorter tour which was the same, but then without the "chilling time" afterwards.
