About the activity

Caving in the Arrábida Natural Park offers a fascinating immersion into an underground world where time seems to stand still. Between Sesimbra and Setúbal, less than an hour from Lisbon, the limestone massif of Arrábida hides a network of caves and caverns steeped in centuries-old legends. As you explore these layered galleries, you will discover unique rock formations in total darkness, creating a truly immersive sensory experience.

Your caving excursion from Creiro Beach is led by the WIND team, whose instructors are accredited by the Portuguese Speleology Federation. You will have the privilege of being guided by local experts, including the first Portuguese caver to explore Son Doong, the largest cave in the world. The activity begins with a full briefing on the use of technical equipment, including helmets, harnesses and descenders. You will learn how to move through narrow passages and overcome vertical obstacles using safe abseiling and climbing techniques.

Depending on the day’s conditions and the level of your group, the excursion may take you to the Gruta do Médico, famous for its multi-level galleries, or to the Lapa Verde site, where the mountain dramatically meets the sea. Designed to suit both curious beginners and more experienced cavers, the activity benefits from a high supervision ratio to ensure optimal safety. All personal protective equipment is provided, including a caving suit to protect your clothes.

The cave was an amazing beginner cave to experience it for the first time, very beautiful parts and challenging enough. We then had the option to abseil and it was such an adrenaline rush!

Introduction to caving, requires a pretty good level of stamina to reach the places and progress in the cave. Wear proper shoes and trousers (avoid shorts). Might not be suited for deeply claustrophobic people. My partner for example was not able to stay underground but I had no problem myself.

We really enjoyed this caving trip. Our guides were friendly, accomodating and easy-going throughout the whole day. I'm claustrophobic and my girlfriend is afraid of heights but we still had a lot of fun. We definitely recommend this experience.
