If you love a challenge and feel drawn to the underground world, set off on an exceptional caving adventure in the Port de l’Hers chasm, in Ariège.
Located about 40 minutes from Tarascon-sur-Ariège, this chasm is considered one of the most impressive in the Ariège Pyrenees. With nearly 700 meters of depth and over 4 kilometers of galleries, it offers a truly unique terrain for exploration.
Guided by a passionate and certified instructor, you’ll experience a full immersion underground in a small group of no more than 4 participants, ensuring both safety and a friendly atmosphere.
After receiving your full equipment and a short 15-minute approach walk, the descent begins with a breathtaking 60-meter abseil into a monumental shaft. The expedition continues through narrow vertical passages, vast underground chambers, and even a hidden river deep within the mountain.
Over the course of this 11-hour adventure, you’ll move through stunning landscapes shaped by time: rose-hued marble limestone, lherzolite walls, and impressive mineral formations revealed only by the beam of your headlamp. The highlight of the journey is reaching a siphon located 400 meters below the surface, a true reward for lovers of exploration and adrenaline. In caving, a siphon refers to a submerged passage, often found at the deepest point of a cave. It is a natural phenomenon that must be seen to be believed.
With a constant temperature of 8°C inside the Port de l’Hers chasm, the experience is demanding but accessible to motivated adventurers seeking total immersion.
This full-day caving expedition is a rare and unforgettable experience, reserved for adventurous spirits eager to push their limits. It’s a unique opportunity to discover one of the deepest and most spectacular sites in the region, in a pristine setting at the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees.
Don’t hesitate, and dive into the adventure with this caving experience in the Port de l’Hers chasm!
